I recently gave a presentation to 80+ designers on how to build strategic influence at work.
I focused on one core principle every designer should adopt, a practical framework for building influence, and actionable tips you can start using right away. It’s a culmination of many of my own learnings.
The designers who become truly influential are those with high agency.
High agency is a mindset. These designers are proactive and believe they can shape outcomes. They spot opportunities, make intentional choices, and move things forward without waiting to be asked.
One key idea: trust is everything.
“If people do not trust you, they will not hear your ideas, rendering your efforts dead in the water.”
Warmth comes before competence. No matter how talented we are, it’s our kindness that opens doors. Lead with trust, empathy, and clarity before showcasing skill.
I also introduced Nancy Duarte’s “Sparkline” framework, a simple way to structure presentations by showing what’s not working, what’s possible, and how your solution bridges the gap.
For introverts or anyone nervous about public speaking, I shared practical ways to get started and build confidence over time.
Watch the full presentation for the full framework and practical tips you can apply straight away.
