For years, the gold standard in product design was the ability to craft beautiful, high-fidelity mockups. Today, AI can generate polished-looking screens in seconds. Many lack coherence, originality, and product understanding, and they still require a designer’s judgment to become useful.

Even so, this speed has changed expectations. Teams now face growing pressure to move from idea to interface at breakneck speed, often before they have worked through the product itself.

This brings a new challenge to the forefront: when anyone can create high-fidelity designs before doing the real product thinking, what truly matters?

AI usually delivers what is common and expected. When teams have not defined the product clearly, AI fills the gaps with familiar patterns and assumptions. Sometimes the result is noisy, contradictory, or completely off base. Other times it looks coherent but feels generic. In both cases, the interface appears more resolved than the thinking behind it.

The more teams rely on these familiar defaults, the more products begin to resemble one another.

People notice when everything feels the same, and they are tuning out.

This growing sameness has created a massive “taste premium” in the design industry. As AI handles more of the mechanical, “screen factory” work, companies increasingly prioritize designers with the judgment and experience to take on complex problems. The market is starving for good design, which requires the human ability to recognize, validate, and articulate why a product experience truly works.

Clear documentation is first and foremost for your team. It aligns the team on what you’re building and helps you and AI make good decisions. If you can’t clearly express the product’s purpose, logic, and requirements, neither your team nor your tools can build the right thing.

This is why the most valuable design work now happens before anyone makes a single screen. The work that matters involves thinking clearly, aligning the team, defining the system, and writing things down so decisions become clear, referenceable, and actionable.

As AI handles more of the hands-on work in design, the value of human judgment and taste comes into sharper focus.

But designers now face a new challenge: translating that vision into something explicit that can guide teammates and direct AI.

For decades, entry-level designers sharpened their visual skills, attention to detail, and design judgment through the “foundational tasks” of resizing screens, building wireframes, and managing layouts by hand. AI can now complete many of these lower-level tasks in seconds.

This raises a big question: if fewer designers learn through foundational production work, how do we develop tomorrow’s senior designers? As AI takes on more production, real “taste,” the ability to spot, explain, and champion what makes a design truly work, becomes one of the rarest and most valuable skills.

Turn instinct into clear guidance

AI cannot infer a specific vision from gut instinct alone. Designers who cannot explain why something works will struggle to guide it beyond generic, average results. Senior designers need to practice turning their visual sense and product judgment into clear, structured guidance.

Show your thinking alongside the visual work. Explain the rules, principles, and reasoning behind the design. This helps stakeholders understand your decisions, turns individual judgment into guidance the team can reuse, and gives AI more relevant and specific context.

Alignment and documentation are becoming core design work

Alignment builds shared understanding around the product’s purpose, users, system behavior, and key decisions. Documentation gives that understanding a durable form the team can reference, question, and build from throughout the design process.

Here’s how to build that clarity before designing:

Writing is becoming the backbone of the design process

Writing gives systems thinking a practical form. It helps designers define logic, scope, relationships, and requirements before those decisions become embedded in an interface.

Putting this thinking into words exposes gaps, contradictions, and assumptions that visual work can easily conceal. It gives the team a clearer understanding of the system they need to design.

Markdown has become a particularly useful format for this work. It is lightweight, easy to update, and readable by teammates and AI tools alike. A Markdown file can capture concept statements, system relationships, product rules, assumptions, requirements, and other decisions that give the work a shared foundation.

The value comes from making product thinking explicit and maintaining it as the work develops. Markdown simply gives that thinking a practical, portable home. This simple form of documentation improves how people collaborate and how machines generate work.

A strong written foundation becomes your product’s “intelligence layer.”

By mapping the big ideas, data, relationships, and rules in clear language, you give your teammates the context they need to build something that actually works. You also give AI meaningful boundaries, so it can respond to your product rather than fill the gaps with generic assumptions.

Writing reveals uncertainty, exposes disagreements, and gives the team something concrete to discuss before visual details take center stage.
